The Mergozzo Graniti company was founded
in 1954 as one of the first companies specialised in
the extractive activity in the area of Mergozzo with
the concession of the Mergozzo and Montorfano quarries,
specialised in the extraction of granite.
These were the years of post-war reconstruction, whereas
urban reconstruction also reached the suburban areas.
Transportation was difficult so local materials and
labour were widely used.
In those years, the work of Mergozzo Graniti was divided
in two parts:
|
|
Extractive activity: The company managed the quarries of the Municipality of Mergozzo from which it mainly extracted granite, such as green granite of Mergozzo and white granite of Montorfano. These materials were mainly used in cart tracks and kerbs for street furniture.

Transformation activity:
The extracted granite was transported to the workshop
of the company, not too far from the quarries, on carts
initially drawn by animals and then motorised, in order
to be worked. The primary transformation of granite was
intended for the preparation of pillars, portals and kerbs
for binding roads being constructed and finished at that
time. In those years, ca 100,000 meters of kerbs were
produced per year. |
